Programs

The Metzenbaum Foundation administers programs to engage, integrate and support individuals with developmental disabilities in Geauga County. The foundation partners with and utilizes local organizations to implement meaningful experiences for the whole community.

Community Connections

The Community Connections Program supports a variety of activities, outings and events, with little or no cost to participants, that promote typical interactions between members of the public at large and individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department

The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department provides administrative, programming and coaching support for Special Olympics, Aktion Club of Geauga, Dinner Club, Lunch Bunch, social events including day and overnight trips and other on-site social gatherings.

Special Olympics

Participating in Special Olympics Ohio, Northeast Region, The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department competes locally, regionally, and in select state events. Home to the Bluestreaks, our Special Olympic teams are five-time state champions in softball, two-time state champions in men’s basketball, two-time state champions in women’s basketball, and three-time state champions in volleyball.

Under the direction of head coaches Bonnie Veleba and Michelle Avram and a slew of volunteers, The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department competes in eight Special Olympic sports: Basketball, Bowling, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Track, and Volleyball.

Aktion Club

Aktion Club is a community-service group for individuals living with disabilities. The “K” in Aktion stands for West Geauga Kiwanis, our sponsoring organization. This club will give you the opportunity to develop leadership skills, serve the community, and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Aktion Club meets once a month on Saturdays.

Dinner/Lunch Club

Once a month, The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department plans dinner and lunch outings with small groups of clients. Meeting and eating at a local restaurant gives dinner/lunch club members a chance to gather with friends, practice social skills and enjoy delicious meals.

Social Events, Outings and Fieldtrips

The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department plans and implements opportunities for individuals to enjoy outings and social events. Depending on the season you can find our team with clients at Hay Rides, Yoga in the Park, the Science Center, Punderson Overnights and more. Throughout the year the rec department holds dances at The Metzenbaum Center including the annual Halloween Bash complete with costumes.

Family Home Based Service

The Family Home Based Service (FHBS) program supports families caring for their child or relative in their home. The program is available to all clients who are eligible for county board services. FHBS provides funds for items including: Respite Care, Disability Based Dietary Assistance, Disability Based Personal Care Goods, Disability Based Equipment, Transportation and Recreation Programs.

Summer Support Funds

The Summer Support Funds Program (SSF) is available to individuals ages 7–21 that are eligible for county services and still in school. Families utilize SSF to participate in residential camps, day camps, sport activities, and/or respite services. These funds are available by application and provide support from June through August.

Amish School Support

The Metzenbaum Foundation supports two Amish schools (Sunny Acres Parochial School and Sunny Hope Parochial School) who serve individuals with developmental disabilities in Geauga County. Grant funds are used for programming and transportation.
