Providing Support for Athletic, Fun, and Social Gatherings
The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department provides administrative, programming and coaching support for Special Olympics, Aktion Club of Geauga, Dinner Club, Lunch Bunch, social events and gatherings.
Special Olympics
Participating in Special Olympics Ohio, Northeast Region, the Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department competes locally, regionally and in select state events.
Under the direction of Bonnie Veleba and Josh Kain and a slew of volunteer coaches, The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department competes in eight Special Olympic sports:
- Basketball
- Bowling
- Golf
- Soccer
- Softball
- Swimming
- Track
- Volleyball
Home to the Bluestreaks, our Special Olympic teams are five-time state champions in softball, two-time state champions in men’s basketball, two-time state champions in women’s basketball and three-time state champions in volleyball.
Aktion Club
Aktion Club is a community-service group for individuals living with disabilities.
The “K” in Aktion stands for West Geauga Kiwanis, the sponsoring organization. This club provides opportunities to develop leadership skills, to serve the community, and to develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

Dinner/Lunch Club
Once a month, The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department plans dinner and lunch outings with small groups of clients. Meeting and eating at a local restaurant gives dinner/lunch club members a chance to gather with friends, practice social skills and enjoy delicious meals.
Social Events, Outings and Fieldtrips
The Metzenbaum Foundation Rec Department plans and implements opportunities for individuals to enjoy outings and social events. Depending on the season you can find our team with clients at Hay Rides, Yoga in the Park, the Science Center, Punderson Overnights and more.
Throughout the year the rec department holds dances at The Metzenbaum Center including the annual Halloween Bash complete with costumes.
